Funkmaster Flex
Born in the Bronx, DJ Funkmaster Flex was raised and came up the ranks during hip-hop’s golden era. He started DJing local nightclubs at the age of 16, and soon after began his radio career working for fellow Bronx native, Chuck Chillout on Kiss-FM. In the early1990s, Flex’s live sets from clubs began to gain popularity. He was soon able to convince Hot 97 to begin broadcasting his sets and, due to the success of these broadcasts, the station began rethinking their entire broadcast plan and changed it to include more hip hop. In 1992, Hot 97 gave Flex his own radio show and he has been with the station ever since. His show currently airs across the country six nights per week and he has been credited more than any other modern DJ at being able to make or break new artists.
